A research project titled Enhancing the Usability of Biodiversity Data for Sustainable Conservation and Livelihoods in the Eastern Arc Mountains of Tanzania reveals the presence of over 3,935 biodiversity species in the natural forests of Kilombero, Udzungwa, and Uluguru

To address water scarcity, Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) has acquired a well drilling rig. This initiative, facilitated by the Higher Education for Economic Transformation (HEET) project, aims not only to tackle water shortages but also to provide practical training for students pursuing degrees related to water resource engineering.

For about 10 years now, SUA and RECODA have had a fruitful formal collaboration. the MoU Steering Committee Meeting was held at RECODA Site Office in Morogoro (Photo 1).

Candidates for Postgraduate Diploma, Master and PhD Degree programmes by Coursework and Dissertation are admitted and registered once every year for an academic year that starts in October of each year. In #Tanzania the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies is higher in rural areas, while overweight and obesity are higher among the urban population. To tackle malnutrition in the country #FoodLAND's nutrition experts have generated a total of 9️⃣0️⃣ nutritional recommendations tailored to the specific needs of people at different stages of the life cycle. In addition, the #SUA team has improved bean varieties and developed processed composite flour, rich in micronutrients, especially iron and zinc. A team of BSc. Wildlife Management students from the Department of Wildlife Management Celebrating their achievement Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) has etched its mark on the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, with a remarkable achievement by BSc. Wildlife Management students from the College of Forestry, Wildlife and Tourism. On Wednesday morning, 2024, the students successfully reached Uhuru Peak after a thrilling three-day journey, marking a significant milestone in their field practical studies.

The project entitled “Creating Inclusive and Sustainable Food Systems in Refugee hosting contexts in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)” in short ECOFOOD, whose implementation started in August 2023 and ends in July 2027, was officially launched on the 10th June, 2024 by the Vice Chancellor of Gulu University in Uganda, Prof. George L. Openjuru. Also in attendance were Dr. Collins Okello, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment and some faculty members as well as project team members representing five contributing institutions led by Ruralis - Institute for Rural and Regional Research based in Norway. The other institutions are Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL), Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), and Gulu University. The SUA ECOFOOD team was represented by Prof. Dismas Mwaseba and Dr. Akwilima Mwanri. Funded by the Research Council of Norway, ECOFOOD will investigate how access to agricultural resources (land, water, farm inputs, technology, credit) and climate-resilient innovations, can foster the effective participation of women and youth small-scale food producers in local food systems. Besides, ECOFOOD will provide knowledge on barriers and incentives to adopting climate-resilient innovations within different food systems (crop, livestock, and fisheries) in refugee hosting contexts in Uganda and Tanzania.

The participants of the professional wine production seminar in the country have been advised to invest their time in learning the best way to prepare and produce good wine so that it can compete with similar products that are produced by competing countries.

Between 15h and 19th April 2024, the UNESCO Chair on Ecohydrology and Transboundary Water Management hosted at  the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, College of Natural and Applied Sciences (CONAS) of Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) organized the 6th International Training on Ecohydrology in Tanzania

Sokoine University of Agriculture has launched an innovative research project using tree sap to treat mastitis fever in dairy animals, where it has been stated that the fever is dangerous for the animal and leads to losses for the breeder because its treatment is expensive and takes a long time as well as it causes loss of milk.

Education Stakeholders from various universities in Tanzania suggest the Government collaborate with Universities to see the importance of formulating policies and guidelines that will coordinate the use of artificial intelligence in education and enable the country to benefit from this vital technology that significantly benefits education and community development.

The Mobility in Innovative Green Technologies for Climate Change Mitigation and Sustainable Bioeconomy (INTERACT-Africa) project was officially launched on 3rd May 2024 at Kisumu Hotel Kenya.

The Aquaculture section under the Department of Model Training Farm (DMTF) at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) is committed to nurturing competent professionals who will address the low productivity and profitability of fish farms and support the blue economy policy in Tanzania. The DMTF is strategically designed to provide students with real hand practices and experience in every aspect of fish farming, from pond construction to fish processing.

An international collaboration of 356 scientists in which Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) is a collaborator has found almost identical patterns of tree diversity across tropical forests of the world. A study of more than one million trees across 1,568 tropical locations worldwide, published in Nature, observed that 2.2% of tree species make up 50% of the total number of trees in tropical forests across Africa, the Amazon (South America), and Southeast Asia, with each continent consisting of the same proportion of a few common species and many rare species.

The Department of Model Training Farm (DMTF) through the Pasture Management Units is showcasing practical livestock husbandry techniques to local communities, emphasizing the business aspect. This success is largely attributed to the established diverse pastures like Bracharia ruziziensis, Cenchrus ciliaris, Chloris gayana, Pennisetum purpureum, Juncao grass, and Guatemala grass, and more.

Sokoine University of Agriculture, has launched a four-year Research Project tilted “Mobility in Innovative Green Technologies for Climate Change Mitigation and Sustainable Bioeconomy (Mabadilishano ya Ubunifu wa Teknolojia Kijani Kukabili Mabadiliko ya Tabianchi kwa Uchumi Hai Endelevu) (MUTKKMTUHE)”. The major aim of the project is to advance knowledge of green technologies in Africa and increase scholars’ capacity in addressing climate change mitigation and sustainable bioeconomy. The project was launched on 26th April 2024 at the College of Natural and Applied Sciences. 

On April 22, 2024, Her Excellency Tone Tinnes, the Ambassador of the Royal Norwegian Embassy to Tanzania, paid a special visit to the Aquaculture, Dairy, and Pasture units within the Department of Model Training Farm (DMTF). During her visit, Hon. Tone Tinnes expressed her satisfaction with the practical skills imparted to students in Sustainable Fish Farming, Pasture Establishment, and Management. She commended the department’s efforts in preparing students to become self-employed entrepreneurs or effective Extension Officers capable of providing crucial advisory support to farmers.

On April 2nd, 2024, special visitors from the World Food Program (WFP) visited the Aquaculture unit in the Department of Model Training Farm, part of the College of Agriculture at Sokoine University of Agriculture. The purpose of the visit was to learn and see the best fish farming practices adopted at the Aquaculture unit as a means to enhance food security.

The objective of the workshop is to share RUFORUM’s expertise in successfully enhancing curriculum design that integrates competence-based curricula, envisions transformative education, and competitive projects for Agri-food systems. Also, this workshop aims to develop an appreciation of SUA as a member university of RUFORUM networks and build a community of partners to amplify the potential impact of RUFORUM programs.

The World Food Programme (WFP) in Tanzania and the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance research and technology use, including accurate climate change monitoring and mitigation in agriculture.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Planning, Finance, and Administration), Prof.  Amandus Muhairwa has led the event of receiving two Toyota Hilux pickup vehicles with equipment for Forestry research activities done by experts at the College of Forestry, Wildlife and Tourism.  The vehicles with field equipment were provided by the Forestry Development Trust (FDT).

SUA students dominate the top ten in the 11th National Essay Writing Competition, organized by the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS).

The East African Community through the East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO) has appointed Professor Esron Daniel Karimuribo, from Sokoine University of Agriculture, as the Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of the East African Journal of Science, Technology and Innovation. Professor Karimuribo becomes the second EIC succeeding Professor George Gitau from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. Professor Karimuribo will serve as EIC for the next five year from the official date of appointment which is 22nd March, 2024.

Five Sokoine University of Agriculture students who own Afya ya Mnyama Digital Company Limited won the Best Startup Innovation Award for their idea of Mnyama Chech Digital Platforms, which was organised by the local mobile company Vodacom through the Vodacom Foundation in collaboration with HUAWEI and the Mass Challenge.

The National Kiswahili Council (BAKITA) and the Zanzibar Kiswahili Council (BAKIZA) have not only accepted but eagerly embraced the proposal of the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) to collaborate on standardizing agricultural terminology in Kiswahili.

Sokoine AGRI-ENTERPRISE (SAEG) pitched their innovative idea MbogaFasta in the Innovation horticulture value addition of the USAID feed the future, and emerged among the winners.

Morogoro Regional Commissioner Adam Malima has said that youth from the YEESI LAB SUA project will help the Morogoro Region in increasing production in agriculture.  Morogoro Regional Commissioner Adam Malima has also said that, youth from the YEESI LAB SUA project, will help the Morogoro region in solving environmental challenges in Mount Uluguru.

The National Carbon Monitoring Centre (NCMC) actively participated in a significant milestone event by contributing to the launch of the National Bamboo Strategy and Action Plan in Dar es Salaam on Monday, February 19, 2024. During the event, NCMC representative specifically addressed the processes, criteria, and requirements for carbon credit projects in Tanzania. NCMC representative emphasized the overlooked potential of bamboo for generating carbon credits in Tanzania. He highlighted bamboo’s rapid growth rate, which allows for significant carbon removal in a relatively short timeframe compared to other tree species. This means that the majority of carbon benefits from bamboo cultivation can be realized within ten years after planting.

Tanzania’s launch of a National Bamboo Strategy and Action Plan marks a significant step towards harnessing the potential of bamboo as a sustainable resource and an avenue for climate action. Bamboo, with its rapid growth rate and versatility, offers a multitude of environmental and economic benefits, including carbon sequestration, soil erosion prevention, and livelihood diversification.

Morogoro YEESI Lab is a PEER project hosted at the Sokoine University of Agriculture, Directorate of Information and Communication Technology. The project is funded by the National Academy of Sciences, the US Agency for International Development, and the US Department of Agriculture.

The Vice Chancellor of the Sokoine University of Agriculture  Prof. Raphael Chibunda and the Rector of Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Prof Siri Fjellheim, signing an MoU to renew collaboration between SUA and NMBU on Research, teaching, outreach and capacity building during the Climate and Food Security event witnessed by  H.E. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania  and the Norwegian Minister of International Development Hon. Anne B.  Tvinnereim.

The aim of the meeting was to have common understanding of the progress made by the project since when the last meeting was held in  19 – 20 January 2023 on Island of Zanzibar – Tanzania, and to further strategize the implementation of its activities from partner institutions.

Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) is currently implementing the Higher Education for Economic Transformation (HEET) project, a five-year venture aimed at strengthening the learning environment and labor market alignment of priority programs. The project, in partnership with the Government of Tanzania and the World Bank, has allocated significant funds to support the construction and repair of infrastructure, improve curricula, purchase equipment, and facilitate staff training.

“Nature-based and Bankable Nature Solutions for Environmental Sustainability” November 13th - 17th, 2023: National Carbon Monitoring Centre - Sokoine University of Agriculture, Tanzania Between 13th and 17th, November 2023, the UNESCO Chair on Ecohydrology and Transboundary Water Management of Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) organized the 5th International Training on Ecohydrology in Tanzania. The one-week training was conducted at National Carbon Monitoring Centre (NCMC), Sokoine University of Agriculture, Morogoro Tanzania. Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) has trained about 20 smallholder farmers in Morogoro through the Integrated IoT, AI, and a Swahili Chatbot: Agri-Tech Solution (MkulimaGPT) Project, which is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The training focused on an Artificial Intelligence (AI) System that operates in Swahili and aims to provide farmers with timely advice on maize cultivation. This system also enables farmers to address farm-related issues on their own, without the assistance of an Extension Officer.

The American students from the School for International Training (SIT) at Mazumbai Forest Reserve in Tanga Region, Tanzania, had the opportunity to conduct field work on Tropical Forest biodiversity. Mazumbai Forest Reserve is one of the SUA’s outposts where forestry students, Wildlife Management, Bachelor of Tourism Management from the Department of Ecosystem and Conservation, Department of Wildlife Management and Department of Tourism and Recreation conducts their field work as part of the university’s effort to ensure it produces competent graduates. This year, the American students from SIT, who have a partnership with Sokoine University of Agriculture, visited Mazumbai Forest Reserve to study tropical forests. Their main objective was to measure forest longevity at Mazumbai and the Sagara community forest and compare their biodiversity using the bowl trapping method in the ground.

Minister of State in the Office of the Vice President (Union and Environment), Hon. Dr. Selemani Jafo (Mb), recently engaged in a bilateral meeting with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) to deliberate on crucial matters related to collaboration in the execution of diverse projects aimed at mitigating the impacts of climate change. The primary focus of this meeting was to explore avenues for joint efforts in addressing pressing environmental challenges.

On the second day of the U.N. COP28 Climate Conference in Dubai, stark disagreements emerged regarding the future utilization of fossil fuels. Following COP28 President Sultan al-Jaber’s stance, urging a phasedown rather than elimination of fossil fuel use, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres presented a contrasting perspective. Guterres, addressing the delegates, emphasized the urgency of transitioning to renewable energy, stating, “We cannot save a burning planet with a fire hose of fossil fuel.” He advocated for an accelerated and equitable shift towards renewable energy sources, aligning with the goals set in the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement. Guterres asserted that limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius necessitates a complete cessation of burning all fossil fuels, not merely reduction or abatement.

COP28 Dubai, the National Carbon Monitoring Centre (NCMC), actively participating in COP28 on December 2. The NCMC’s participation highlights its steadfast dedication to facilitating Tanzania’s proactive engagement in potential international carbon trading mechanisms under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, with the ultimate goal of mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. The Centre played a crucial role in the workshop, focusing on reporting carbon stocks and coordinating the intricate Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) processes for the Government of Tanzania.

During her visit to the Tanzanian Exhibition Pavilion at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on December 2, 2023, the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Samia Suluhu Hassan, actively engaged with various Tanzanians. In addition to interacting with a diverse audience, she specifically addressed and conversed with youth participants who are actively involved in environmental issues within the country. This interaction at the Expo Dubai grounds highlighted President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s commitment to fostering dialogue and collaboration on crucial environmental matters during the global climate conference.

Tanzanian government initiatives and policies on improving agriculture productivity through facilitation of investments in agriculture sector, has resulted in increased foreign and domestic investments in agriculture in East Africa Region. Speaking at dissemination of research result meeting from the project titled “Agriculture Investors as Development Actor? (AIDA), Acting Regional Administrative Secretary, Iringa region Mr. Elias Luvanda, said results from the research have been useful to the development of the country.

The Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) with the The Aga Khan University (AKU) , University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM),  Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST), and Simon Fraser University (SFU) of Canada to collaborate for environmental research aimed at dealing with the impact of climate change. The ceremony was graced by the Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Prof. Adolf Mkenda.

He said that COTUL's goal is to ensure that electronic publications are available to lecturers and students so that they can do their basic activities of learning, teaching and doing research in this country.

Dr. Mboyerwa will be investigating the influences of alternate wet/dry (AWD) irrigation regimes and phosphorus (P) fertilizer application on rice yield and P use efficiency. Her study will compare these responses in both upland and lowland rice production systems with study sites in Morogoro (eastern Tanzania) and the higher yield potential region of Mbeya (southern Tanzania).

Wuhan University has hosted the GIS-EIA 2023, which aims to promote the connection of global education, talents, innovations, and industry in Geo-Informatics. Experts, scholars, and teachers from around the world were invited to Wuhan to share education experiences, exchange the latest research results, and show the advanced technology and achievements.

During September and October 2023, the FoodLAND partner Helvetas organised two training events for women empowering in the two regions where FoodLAND has established Food Hubs in Tanzania: Mvomero and Kilombero, and specifically, at Ndole and Mang’ula, respectively. It was also supported by researchers from the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), a FoodLAND partner as well, under Principal Investigator, Prof. S. Nchimbi Msolla.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the interconnectedness of human health, animal health, the state of the environment, and the negative effects of underestimating threats at this interface. This interconnectivity means that multi-sectoral and multidisciplinary efforts in the context of One Health Concept should be translated from a concept to a system and partnerships that keep people safer. Unfortunately, the lack of dialogue on what constitutes an equitable and effective One Health partnership, and how to accurately evaluate partnership performance may negate these efforts to operationalise the One Health approach. In the latest article published by researchers from SUA and other institutions in the prestigious journal "The Lancet, Vol 41", analyzed global One Health Networks revealed numerous deficits in geographical distribution and partnership structures. For example, the article shows that there are more one health networks headquartered or operational in Europe than in any other region worldwide, existence of self-identified One Health Networks that have little involvement with environment or ecosystems stakeholders, and selective engagement of community stakeholders in the design, and agenda-setting phases of implementation. “These and other identified gaps have the potential effects on the effectiveness and sustainability of One Health efforts to address urgent threats to global health”. The authors have warned. Nevertheless, the authors propose solutions to address the identified gaps including abolishing high-income supremacy and global health agenda that are based on colonial structures and in favor of more inclusive networks that genuinely attempt to overcome One Health issues and help communities most affected by emerging and common threats. Researchers from SUA have participated in a collaborative research and published a peer review article titled Inequitable Gains and Losses from Conservation in a Global Biodiversity Hotspot. It has been published in very good journal, Springer. The Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) together with the Tanzania Organic Agriculture Movement (TOAM) organized a one-day stakeholder workshop on 15th September 2023 at Morena Hotel in Dodoma City.

During her response to a question from a young attendee at the 2023 African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF) held at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre (JNICC), President Samia eloquently outlined the Tanzanian government's strategic initiatives concerning the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) systems into the agricultural sector. Simultaneously, she elucidated the measures devised to attract younger generations to engage in agriculture. She further underscored the application of ICT in precision irrigation techniques, ensuring the timely and optimal supply of water to crops.

Prof. Japhet Kashaigili from the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) who is the Principal Researcher of the two-year project on the Sustainable Catchment Management through Enhanced Environmental Flows Assessment and Implementation for the protection of the Western Indian Ocean from land-based sources and activities in Tanzania (EFLOWS) while presenting the results of the study to the stakeholders of the Mbarali River in the district in Mbeya Region.

The Department of Informatics and Information Technology is pleased to announce a double victory, as they have successfully secured not one, but TWO grants. These grants, generously funded by COSTECH, IDRC and NORAD, represent a significant accomplishment for the department and the College of Natural and Applied Sciences (CoNAS) at Sokoine University of Agriculture. The first team, under the guidance of Dr. Michael P. J. Mahenge, has emerged victorious in obtaining a grant for their pioneering project titled “Development of Artificial Empowered Crop Disease Surveillance Prediction and Management.” The accomplished team includes members such as Dr. Farian Ishengoma, Prof Camilius A. Sanga, Dr Richard Madeghe, Dr Beatrice Mwaipopo, and collaborators from TPHPA and RECODA.

Three staff from SUA, Ms. Catherine Mangare, Dr. Hadijah Mbwana and Ms. Rehema Mwawado, are attending the Innovative Summer School in Rabat, Morocco, which is aimed at empowering African women in the fields of technology and artificial intelligence (AI). The three staff are from the Department of Informatics and Information Technology, Department of Human Nutrition and Consumer Sciences, and Mizengo Pinda Campus College at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), respectively. This initiative, known as Women in Tech & AI, is a collaboration between the OCP Foundation and the Ai Movement at Mohamed VI Polytechnic University.

Ms. Theofrida Maginga, who is a member of staff in our Department (DIIT) at Sokoine University of Agriculture has successfully secured prestigious funding through the Global Grand Challenge initiative. Ms. Maginga’s research project titled “Integrated AI, Internet of Things (IoT), and a Swahili Chatbot: Agricultural Technology Solution for Early Detection of Maize Diseases”, will be supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as part of the Catalyzing Equitable Artificial Intelligence (AI) Use program.
