    In the recent ranking results released by webometrics, Sokoine University of Agriculture ranked the first in top Universities with more citations in Google Scholar profiles.
  • Japan to Develop Cooperation with SUA
    In promoting diplomatic cooperation between Japan and Tanzania, the Ambassador of Japan in Tanzania H.E Misawa Yasushi has given 61 books containing original Japanese publications to the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) to help students, researchers, and scholars who have the opportunity to visit the country and being able to learn various things from Japanese experts. The books have been released through the Project to Promote Japanese Culture managed by the Tokyo Foundation since 2008 with the aim of supporting research activities and promoting the understanding of experts from Japan to contribute to the development of human resources.
  • Learning with the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (CVMBS) Through Nanenane Exhibitions 2023.
    The college of Veterinary medicine and Biomedical Sciences is participating in the 30th Nanenane Exhibitions 2023 for Farmers, Livestock keepers and Fishermen. The theme for this year (2023) is “Vijana na Wanawake ni msingi imara wa mifumo endelevu ya chakula” literally means “Youth and Women are the Solid Foundation of Sustainable Food Systems” As part of the main stakeholders in forming sustainable food systems, the college displays various items for showcase.   • Participation of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH) booth at the Eastern Zone Nane Nane Agricultural Exhibition, 2023 under the theme “Youth and Women are the Solid Foundation of Sustainable Food Systems”
    The College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH) embraced the Eastern Zone’s prestigious "Nane Nane Agricultural Exhibition" in 2023 with unwavering enthusiasm, creating a captivating booth that drew attendees from all corners. Adorned with vibrant banners and educational posters, the booth offered a multifaceted experience for visitors. Through informative displays, CSSH unveiled cutting-edge research and innovative practices in sustainable agriculture, emphasizing the pivotal role that youth and women play in shaping resilient food systems. Intriguing interactive activities further enriched the experience, enabling visitors to actively engage with agricultural policy, technologies and practices designed to address food security challenges. From virtual reality simulations of eco-friendly farming methods on agribusiness and women’s leadership in agriculture, the CSSH’s booth buzzed with excitement and intellectual exchange.

    It is a joy, cheers and shouts for the students of the BSc. Family and Consumer Studies of the third year at the Sokoine University of Agriculture after finishing their final examination, an indication of "dream come true".  BSc. Family and Consumer Studies is among few and unique courses of its kind offered by SUA. Graduates from SUA enjoy pleasant environment and committed mentors,  currently  students are expecting to finalise their studies in the beloved University.
  • SUA Forest Products Factory in Madaba to Stimulate Development
    Sokoine University of Agriculture has completed the process of compensating 7 villagers with a farm of 151.16 acres who agreed to have their land used by the university to build a timber processing and value addition factory for forest products in Magingo village, Madaba district, Ruvuma region.
  • SUA Has Been Given 10,000 Hectares for Tree Farming and Training in Madaba.
    Sokoine University of Agriculture has signed a formal contract with the Madaba District Council in Ruvuma for the ownership of a 10,000 hectare farm for tree farming and practical training for its students and the community. Speaking before signing the contract in the council hall, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Research and Professional Consultancy, Prof. Maulid Mwatawala, on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Raphael Chibunda, said that the purpose of the farm is for training and increasing revenue.
  • Exploring the Future: TBC Visits SUA’s 3D and Robotics Studio at Solomon Mahlangu Campus
    The Department of Informatics and Information Technology (DIIT) and the College of Natural and Applied Sciences (CoNAS) welcomed the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) to the IT Innovation Lab’s 3D and Robotics studio (CEZERI Studio). The studio equipment were generously donated by the Turkish people under the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA).

  • Tanzania Launches a National Digital Platform for Disaster Management
    Ofisi ya Waziri Mkuu Sera, Bunge na Uratibu imekipongeza Chuo Kikuu cha Sokoine cha Kilimo (SUA) kwa kuhakikisha kinafanyakazi pamoja na Serikali na kutumia tafiti na rasilimali zake kunufaisha wananchi katika sekta mbalimbali ikiwemo namna ya kujiandaa kukabiliana na majanga.
  • Ms. Joan Jonathan, a Researcher from SUA, was Awarded Best Oral Presenter in a Conference Organized by COSTECH
    Science, Technology and Innovation Conference and Exhibitions (STICE) is a national and multi-sectoral event organized every year by Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH). The objective of STICE among others includes providing a platform for multi-stakeholders (policy makers, scientists, researchers, innovators, funders, development partners and industry players) to meet and exchanging information and experiences from Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) activities. This year it was held on 14TH – 16TH June 2023 with a theme ‘Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development’ - “Sayansi, Teknolojia na Ubunifu kwa Maendeleo Endelevu”
  • Intensification of cooperation with Mzumbe and Sokoine University of Agriculture, Tanzania
    The ERASMUS cooperation with two universities in Tanzania was intensified as Dr. Simone Giertz, international coordinator at the Depratment of Geography, University of Bonn, visited both universities in May. In June, Prof. Felister Mombo from Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) and Dr. Lucy Massoi from Mzumbe University visited Bonn.
  • Msitu wa Hifadhi wa Mazumbai Wawezesha Watafiti na Watalii Duniani
    Chuo Kikuu cha Sokoine cha Kilimo (SUA) kimeendelea kupokea Watafiti, Wanasayansi na Watalii kutoka nchi mbalimbali duniani wanaokwenda kujifunza, kufanya tafiti na utalii juu ya masuala mbalimbali ya Misitu na Viumbe wengine wengi kwenye Msitu wa Hifadhi Mazumbai ambao haujawahi kuguswa toka miaka ya 1,800 enzi za ukoloni wa Mjerumani. Msitu huu unapatikana Jimbo la Bumbuli Mkoani Tanga. Hayo yamebainishwa na Mhadhiri Msaidizi na Kaimu Mwangalizi wa Msitu huo na kituo hicho cha Mafunzo cha SUA Mhifadhi Chamalindi Bugingo Muriga wakati akiongea na Waandishi wa habari waliokwenda kutembelea kituo hicho kuona vivutio mbalimbali vya kipekee na viumbe vinavyopatikana kwenye msitu huo.

    Chuo Kikuu cha Sokoine cha Kilimo (SUA) kimekubaliana kuweka ushirikiano na Taasisi za nchini India ikiwemo Taasisi ya Teknolojia India (ITI) katika maeneo mbalimbali ikiwemo Tafiti zinazohusu matatizo yanayokabili nchi hizo, Makampuni ya kibiashara, kupeleka Wanataaluma na Wafanyakazi kwenye mafunzo katika vyuo vikuu vya India ili kuweza kupata utatuzi wa changamoto zinazozikabili nchi hizo pamoja na watu wake.
  • SUA Leads a Team of Researchers and Expert Nutritionists in the Country
    A team of researchers and experts in nutrition issues in the country, led by the Sokoine University of Agriculture, met for a four-day training to build their capacity before starting a national exercise to make a rapid assessment of the causes and indicators of malnutrition and stunting in eight regions of Tanzania. Opening the training, the Assistant Director of Nutrition Services from the Office of the President TAMISEMI Mr. Mwita Waibe said that the task given to the national task force is the result of the mission of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania Hon. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan who wants to reduce and completely end the problem of malnutrition and stunting in the country through detailed research and the answers will be given by the task force.

Dustan Kyobya has requested experts from Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) to build understanding on the right way of adding value to the production of rice together with the strategies of adding value to the production in the district Kyobya made the request when he was opening a workshop organized by researchers from SUA that brought together agricultural stakeholders to provide feedback on research on the Participatory Development of Climate Services to Improve Food Security, Nutrition and Health in Tanzania.

  • A YEESI Lab Student, MR FIKIRI MATATIZO Wins a Pitch Competition at The Sua University-Industry Day
    Mr. Fikiri Matatizo, a YEESI Lab and 3rd year BSc. with Education (Physics and IT) student at Sokoine University of Agriculture placed first in a pitch competition that was conducted at the National Carbon Monitoring Centre (NCMC). Mr Fikiri presented his final year project in which he is developing a "Plant Diseases Detection and Monitoring App". This mobile app is using machine vision technology (AI-based) to detect diseases affecting tomato plants. Mr Fikiri is using the YEESI dataset to train the model. The App is based on Flutter technology with its backend using TensorFlow Lite. Mr Fikiri is being advised on this project by the YEESI Lab PI, Dr Kadeghe Fue.

  • The United Nation has appointed SUA graduate to the UN Advisory Committee 2023/2024
    The United Nations has appointed Ghaamid Abdulbasat (@ghaamid.a) as a member of the International Advisory Committee (IAC) representing the youth of Africa and the world to implement the Nagoya Protocol of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity/Environment. The objective is to strengthen the implementation of the agreement following the launch of the biodiversity policy framework in December 2022 in Canada at the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15), of which Tanzania is also a member.

    The Vice Chancellor of Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) Prof. Raphael Chibunda said the completion of the Multi-purpose Teaching building has solved the challenges of teaching and learning rooms at the Edward Moringe Campus. Prof. Chibunda said this during a short event to congratulate employees who have done well for one year as part of the celebration of the World Workers' Day while the national level was planned to be held in Morogoro region.

    SmartTB, a web-based innovation that was developed from a SUARIS-1 funded project called “Prediction of Diagnostic Accuracy using Big Data Analytics and Visualizations from Trained African Giant Pouched Rats for Tuberculosis Detection at SUA APOPO“, has attracted national attention in innovation. The innovative solution won a third prize at the Competitive Innovation Week Tanzania 2023, Morogoro Edition, which was organized by TAOTIC and provided a platform for innovators, business owners, professionals, angel investors, and talented young people to connect and explore market prospects, collaboration opportunities, and investment potential in Tanzania and beyond.

  • Government Financial Commitment Needed to Rescue the Agricultural Sector in Tanzania
    Agricultural transformation in Tanzania needs more efforts in creating awareness among small-scale farmers to move from subsistence farming and embark on agribusiness. Government commitment in funds allocation and strengthening of ties among the Agricultural Sector Lead Ministries (ASLMs) is of paramount importance.

  • SUA Playing a key role in the Makete-wheat Project
    Piloting Sustainable Wheat Production in Makete as a driver to economic growth and National Food Security was initially conceived by regional and district authorities in Njombe and Makete, respectively. The regional administration immediately saw the need to include SUA as a key partner in the project as the latter could render its enormous expertise in various aspects of the project including but not limited to soil health and fertility assessment, land mapping and suitability assessment, seed health issues, and agronomic knowledge over wheat production and farmer training skills.

    It is with great sorrow, Professor Raphael Chibunda, the Vice Chancellor of the Sokoine University of Agriculture, announces the death of one of the University’s prominent academic member of staff: Professor Rudovick Reuben Kazwala BVSc (Sokoine University of Agriculture, Tanzania), MVM (University College Dublin, Ireland), PhD (University of Edinburgh, UK) who passed away on Monday 03 April, 2023 in Dar es salaam, Tanzania.

    Citizens in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania have been urged to halt human activities within the water sources and rivers so that the country benefits from the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project which is amongst the large national strategic project by ensuring sustainable river flows through implementation of Nature based Solutions (NbS).
  • Ukerewe District Council in Mwanza Region to Benefit with SUA's Fruits Seedlings
    Ukerewe District Council in Mwanza Region has promised to continue to support the efforts of the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) to produce more seedlings after bought 10,000 fruit seedlings. The seedling purchased aimed at raising the income of the people in the Council but also to support environmental protection and climate change mitigation as it have been advocated by the Government. Apart from this, the Council aimed to safeguard the greening initiatives by planting more trees in order to preserve the environment and water sources but also promote self- employment.

Kibirige, in the highly reputable journal, Scientific Reports. The Nature’s “Scientific Reports” journal recently published his research paper titled “Influence of land-sea breeze on PM2.5 prediction in central and southern Taiwan using composite neural network,” and it is now available online.

  • WATCH: FoodLAND 3RD CONFERENCE
    The Foodland 3rd Annual Meeting in Zanzibar is the conference presenting results of the FoodLAND project where SUA is one of the 26 organizations from 13 implementing countries. It is funded by European Union. The main objective of the project is to develop, implement,and validate innovative, scalable, and sustainable technologies aimed at supporting the nutrition performance of local food systems in Africa, while strengthening agro-biodiversity and food diversity as well a diversity of healthy diets. The project started in September 2020 and the country coordinator is Prof. Susan Nchimbi-Msola.

  • SUA and Fair Planet help farmers maximize vegetable crop yields
    Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in collaboration with Fair Planet (a nonprofit organization aiming for the success of smallholder farmers in developing countries), recently hosted over 50 farmers from Mvomero and Morogoro Districts in Morogoro Region who grow vegetables in order to educate them on quality vegetable seed and various techniques and approaches that will assist them to increase production. The event took place on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at the SUA Model Training Farm on the Edward Moringe Campus.
