  • SUA Animal Referral Hospital administers rabies vaccination in Bigwa and Mindu
    On September 28, 2022, Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) through the SUA Animal Referral Hospital collaborated with Morogoro Municipality to provide education, advice, and rabies vaccination to Bigwa and Mindu Wards in Morogoro Municipality. The campaign was part of the stepwise approach to rabies elimination in the country.

  • Annual General Meeting of the Crop Science Association of Tanzania (CROSAT)
    The Crop Science Association of Tanzania (CROSAT) held its Annual General Meeting in Dodoma, Tanzania, on September 22, 2022. CROSAT was founded in 1992 with the goal of bringing together crop scientists and other specialists in related sectors to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and ideas about the science of crop production and processing in order to improve food security in Tanzania.

    Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) is continuing to make a significant contribution in efforts to restore natural vegetation to various water sources in the country where recently more than 50,000 tree seedlings friendly to water and river sources have been prepared with the aim of being planted on the water sources of Mbarali River through the “Sustainable Catchment Management through Enhanced Environmental Flow Assessment (EFLOWS)” project

  • Ugandan Ambassador visits SUA, commends the JUNCAO grass technology
    On Friday, September 23, 2022, the High Commissioner of the Republic of Uganda to the United Republic of Tanzania, retired Colonel Fred Mwesigye, paid a one-day visit to Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) to witness firsthand the wonder of JUNCAO grass, a technology that can be used to solve livestock feed shortages and prevent conflict between farmers and pastoralists.
  • GEOICT4e concludes 8 weeks of the Multi competence Challenge Learning Program
    As part of the implementation of the project titled” GEOICT4e (i.e. Social innovations in Geo-ICT education at Tanzanian Higher Education Institution's for improved employability”), Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) conducted a Multicompetence Challenge Learning (MCL) Campaign for 8 weeks starting from 1st August 2022 to 23.09.2022.
  • SUA and WIOMSA conduct environmental flow assessment training for West Indian Ocean countries

    This training began on September 19, 2022, in Mbarali District, Mbeya Region, and was officially opened by the district commissioner Hon. Reuben Mfune.

    During his speech, he urged those who received the knowledge to ensure that they teach others in the organizations they come from so they can achieve the goal and objectives of the training, which is clean and safe water flowing from rivers to sea all year round.

  • SNAL releases a book and mobile app to aid modern agriculture
    Sokoine National Agricultural Library (SNAL) has developed a handbook and a mobile app to help those interested in investing in agriculture, particularly young people, use modern methods.
  • AGROVEG project trains farmers to apply Agroecological Methodology
    The project arranged training for farmers from Mlimani, Kinyenze, Vitonga, Mlali, and Kiroka wards in Morogoro region from September 11 to 13, 2022. They taught them various agroecological farming methodologies in vegetable crop production, both theoretically and practically.
  • Capacity Building on Environmental Flows Assessment in WIO Countries
    Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) through the support of the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) and the Nairobi Convention (NC) is conducting an international training workshop on the "Capacity Building on Environmental Flows Assessment in Western Indian Ocean (WIO) Countries” from 19th – 24th September 2022 - Rufiji Basin Water Board, Rujewa Catchment Office, Mbeya, Tanzania
  • Launching of the HEET project
    The launching ceremony for the HEET project, which will run for five years from 2021 to 2026, took place in Dar es Salaam in front of representatives from the World Bank, the Ministry of Finance, and the Vice Chancellors of Universities, Higher Education Institutions, and Health Institutions, as well as the Project Coordinators of beneficiary institutions.

  • The “Guardian Angel and Evil” Characters of the Big Liver Cells
    In recently published results from a study conducted using a mouse model of fatty liver disease created through knocking out the Pten gene,  Sokoine University of Agriculture researcher, Dr. Augustine B. Matondo collaborating with his colleagues successfully inhibited the formation of polyploid cells and discovered that polyploid cells promotes lipid accumulation and prevent the development of liver cancer.

    He said that there are times when the world is going through difficult periods to deal with various challenges such as diseases and wars, which causes various products, especially food and oil to become scarce and increase in price.

  • Livestock and Fisheries Minister visits SUA - calls on youth to seize opportunities in agriculture
    He made a special appeal to all youth to take advantage of the various opportunities available in the agriculture and livestock sector, such as joining incubation centers, and promised that the government will support them and connect them with financial institutions such as agricultural banks in order to obtain loans
  • Oliver R. Tambo Africa Research Chair for Viral Epidemics launched at SUA
    The Research Chair aims to develop innovative approaches through science and technology driven by genomics and analytical epidemiology in order to improve the risk management of viral epidemics in Africa, focusing on viral epidemics of livestock and humans including antimicrobial resistance.

  • NCMC organizes SADC regional workshop on REDD+ implementation
    This workshop was organized to share experiences between the Member States on REDD+ initiatives and country experiences on projects undertaken during the REDD+ Readiness Pilot Projects. The workshop also included a discussion on emerging market/business opportunities for REDD+ and countries' preparedness relating to them.

  • SUA student wins ARSO Essay writing competition
    Innocent James, who is a third-year Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management at Sokoine University of Agriculture, has been announced as the 1st runner-up in Tanzania and 2nd winner at the continental level in the 9th Continental Essay Writing competition organized by the African Organization for Standardization (ARSO) and Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) earlier this year.

  • Promoting Ecohydrology in Tanzania through the Use of Nature-based Solutions
    Between 13th and 24th, June 2022, the UNESCO Chair on Ecohydrology and Transboundary Water Management of Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) organized the “Advanced Training Course in Applied Ecohydrology and Watershed Management in Tanzania”. The two weeks training was conducted at the National Carbon Monitoring Centre, Sokoine University of Agriculture, Morogoro Tanzania.
  • AD Scientific Index 2022: SUA scientists emerge best in Tanzania
    The AD Scientific Index 2022 Version 2 named Prof. Rudovick Kazwala, a Professor of Ecosystems and Veterinary Public Health in the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Public Health under the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences as the best scientist in Tanzania, out of the 2000 scientists featured. Similarly, last year, Prof. Kazwala made the Sokoine University of Agriculture proud when the AD Scientific Index Report 2021 listed him as the topmost scholar in Tanzania.

  • SUA signs agreement to implement the HEET project

    HEET project is a five years program that is being implemented by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) in collaboration with the World Bank for the purpose of improving and transforming higher education in Tanzania.

  • Revised fee structure for postgraduate students from the academic year 2022/2023
    The fee structure review considered the nature and the duration of the degree programme where by fee for the 18-month programmes is now separated from the 24-month programmes. Furthermore, the revised fee has been substantially reduced compared to the fee structure which was approved during 2015/16 academic year.

  • MATI-Ilonga students advised to use agricultural information resources from SNAL
    The advice was given by the Director of Sokoine National Agricultural Library – SNAL Prof. Camilius Sanga when he was talking to them during the visitation at the Ministry of Agriculture Training Institute – MATI-Ilonga, Kilosa in the Morogoro region.

    Hayo yamesemwa mnamo tarehe 1 Juni 2022 na mtafiti kutoka Chuo Kikuu cha Sokoine cha Kilimo (SUA), Joseph Rajabu Kangile alipokuwa akiwasilisha matokeo ya utafiti wa awali juu ya kutambua faida za kiuchumi, kijamii na kimazingira zitokanazo na biashara ya kahawa Tanzania, Jijini Dodoma. Utafiti huo ulilenga kuongeza uelewa kwa ajili ya kuchangia katika uundaji wa sera zitakazochochea biashara ya kahawa inayolimwa kwa uendelevu, usawa wa kijamii na uendelevu wa jumla katika mnyororo wa usambazaji Kahawa.

    A team from Sokoine National Agricultural Library – SNAL staff on 10th June 2022 delivered an introductory session on Mkulima Collection repository, SUA, and SNAL activities to the community of students and their lecturers at the Livestock Training Agency (LITA) Morogoro campus

    Amesema kwa kipindi cha miezi 6 tangu kufanyika mahafali ya 38 mwezi Novemba 2021, Baraza lake limeweza kutekeleza majukumu mbalimbali yakiwemo kusimamia Mpango Mkakati wa 4 wa mwaka 2021 ambao umetekelezwa kwa sh. bilioni 54.2 pamoja na kupitisha marekebisho ya viwango vya ada na gharama nyingine kwa Program za Shahada za Uzamili.

    Ameyasema hayo wakati wa kikao cha utoaji taarifa ya utekelezaji wa mafanikio ya Chuo kwa kipindi cha miaka mitano 2017 - 2022 kilichofanyika katika ukumbi wa Multipurpose, Kampasi Kuu ya Edward Moringe Sokoine siku ya Alhamisi tarehe 26 Mei, 2022. 

    Aidha Jaji Warioba ametoa shukrani kwa Serikali ya awamu ya sita kwa kufanya kazi bega kwa bega na Chuo licha ya changamoto mbalimbali ikiwemo uviko19 na kupongeza utendaji kazi shirikishi wa Makamu Mkuu wa Chuo Prof. Raphael Chibunda pamoja na wafanyakazi wa jumuiya ya SUA kwa ujumla. 

  • Bundi kukabiliana na Viumbe visumbufu katika mazao

    Dkt. Nicolaus Mwalukasa Mtafiti Mkuu katika Mradi huo amesema tafiti zinaonesha kwamba moja kati ya Viumbe visumbufu katika mazao ni Panya ambao huwa wanaharibu mazao ya nafaka kwa  5% - 15% kwa mwaka na wakulima wamekuwa wakitumia kemikali zaidi kukabiliana na viumbe hao.

    Amesema wamefanya Tafiti na kuja na mbinu mbadala na rafiki kwa mazigira yenye kuweza kukabiliana na Panya kwa kutumia Bundi na ieleweke kwamba Bundi ni ndege ambaye ni rafiki kwa maana kwamba ana uwezo wa kusaidia kula viumbe kama Panya ambavyo ni visumbufu vya mazao ya wananchi wengi.

  • Prof. Chibunda encourages staff to work hard for SUA to achieve its goals

    Prof. Chibunda made the call while delivering his speech at the world workers' day (May Day) event which took place in the Multipurpose Hall located at Edward Moringe Campus

    He said that the only way for SUA to achieve its goals is for all staff to ensure that they work hard and fulfill their responsibilities with the utmost integrity to reduce dissatisfaction and grievances from those customers we serve.

  • Modelling Above Ground Biomass Using Sentinel 2 and PlanetScope Data in Dense Tropical Montane Forests of Tanzania

    To advance research on this topic, researchers Ernest William Mauya and Sami Madundo from Sokoine University of Agriculture in Tanzania, used PlanetScope data to model above ground biomass in the dense tropical montane forests of Tanzania.

    Using satellite data, the researchers were able to conduct this research on a large scale and analyze 296 field inventory plots. In tandem with Sentinel 2 data, Planet’s data was integrated into Above Ground Biomass (AGB) models, enabling scientists to make advanced biomass estimations in the region.

  • SUA empowers students to fight HIV/AIDS and non-communicable diseases

    The event was organized by the Directorate of Hospital Services and was opened by the acting Director of the Directorate of Undergraduate Studies Dr. Alex Matofali, who among other things, strongly expressed how non-communicable diseases and AIDS contribute to the disability and many deaths among young people.

    He explained that the effects have increased significantly in recent years whereby according to the 2016/2017 study it was found that the majority of new HIV infections occurred in young people aged 15 - 23 most of whom are in colleges and universities.

  • Reappointment of the Vice Chancellor for a second term
    We would like to inform the community member of the Sokoine University of Agriculture and the General public that, the Chancellor of the Sokoine University of Agriculture Hon. Judge (retired) Joseph Sinde Warioba in accordance with the powers vested in him under section 36 (2) (a) of the Universities Act, 2005 and Regulation 4 (1) and (2) of the First Amendment of SUA Charter, 2007, has appointed Professor Raphael Tihelwa Chibunda as the Vice Chancellor of Sokoine University of Agriculture for another five (5) years effective from April 24, 2022.
  • Workshop on problem based and student centred learning approaches to SUA staff

    Among the outcomes/outputs of the project include a newly approved curriculum by Senate waiting ICT Commission recommendation and TCU accreditation for Bachelor of Science in Information Technology and Innovation (BSc. ITIN) developed by the Department of Informatics and Information Technology at SUA under auspices of EEISHEA project.  

    The developed curriculum is designed to equip graduates with skills and competences for employability and self-employment through establishment of entrepreneurship mind-sets.

    On April 13, 2022, in Morogoro Tanzania, the CoForEST project team organized a special workshop with the aim of sharing with stakeholders and communities the results of various research on forest conservation that they have done since the start of the project.

    Giving a short speech after receiving a report on how the projects will be implemented in the country, the Deputy Minister of Livestock and Fisheries Hon.     Opening the Workshop, the Director of the Directorate of Postgraduate Studies, Research, Technology transfer and Consultancy at SUA Prof. Esron Karimuribo said researchers have often done a lot of researches but there have been challenges on how to present such findings to users.

  • Chief Government Chemist office and SUA partners to help traditional healers improve their products

    The training was attended by more than 35 traditional healers and manufacturers of traditional medicines from various regions of Tanzania who came with more than 100 plant medicinal products which after training and discussion, each will be tested to determine the quality and advise them on the best ways to produce and package them to meet government and international standards.
