    “Tusifanye tafiti kwaajili ya kupanda madaraja au vyeo kwenye kazi zetu bali tufanye tafiti ambazo zinaweza kwenda kujibu changamoto mbalimbali zinazoikabili nchi na Jamii yetu, kwa namna hiyo ndio mtakuwa mmefikia lengo hasa la kufanya utafiti” Alieleza Prof. Mwatawala.

    In the recent ranking results released by webometrics, Sokoine University of Agriculture ranked the first in top Universities with more citations in Google Scholar profiles among the Tanzanian Universities for the period ending January 2022, with a total of 111,886 citations compared to 98, 143 citations of July 2021

  • Magawa, the landmine-sniffing hero rat dies at age of 8
    Every discovery he made reduced the risk of injury or death for the people of Cambodia. Magawa is an African giant pouched rat (Cricetomys ansorgei) that was born in Tanzania at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in November 2013. Since 2000, APOPO has developed its operational headquarters, training and breeding center at SUA where all the landmine detection rats are born and trained. This is also home to APOPO’s Innovation department that researches and develops the innovative applications and advanced techniques used in existing operations. This is where he learned how to find explosives using his amazing sense of smell. Magawa moved to Siem Reap in Cambodia in 2016, where he began his career.

    Users can report unusual health occurrences not only in humans, but also animals. Monitoring animals is critical because most new pathogens start in animals before they spread and sicken humans. With the app, farmers can easily report any suspicious illness among their livestock to health officials, who can then quickly follow up with further investigation, if necessary. While this app is still being piloted in several districts of Tanzania and other parts of Africa, it has already been effective in the detection and identification of several small disease outbreaks.

  • 60 Years of independence - Universities tasked to transform the agriculture sector

    The event took place at SAUT campuses in Mwanza and carried the theme ‘The Contribution of the Agricultural Sector to the Development of Tanzania: Achievements and Challenges after 60 years of Independence’

    Speaking today, December 30, 2021, at a press conference in Mwanza, the Vice Chancellor of Sokoine University of Agriculture, Prof. Raphael Chibunda said the conference will discuss various topics on agricultural development and the contribution of farmers in ensuring food security and nutrition in Tanzania
    Prof. Chibunda said in these 60 years of Independence, Tanzanian farmers have worked hard in the production of agricultural, livestock, and fisheries products and thus leading the nation to cope with food shortages when arise.

    Speaking during the project launch in Mbarali, Professor Japhet Kashaigili who is EFLOWS project leader from Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), said the first phase of the project involves taking samples and carrying out important tests in this season and later will continue to do so throughout other seasons of the year to gather important information.

  • Dr. Alcardo Alex Barakabitze wins the Best ICT Researcher Award for 2021

    Dr. Alcardo Alex Barakabitze from the Department of Informatics and Information Technology, College of Natural and Applied Science, Sokoine University of Agriculture was awarded the Best ICT Researcher Award for his research excellence after publishing articles and papers in high impact conferences and journals including IEEE, Computer Networks Elsevier, and Wiley.

    Dr. Barakabitze stressed that ICT awards at the institutional and national level are the key in fostering research, innovation, and creativity in the country.

    Pongezi hizo zimetolewa na Mkuu wa Chuo Kikuu cha Sokoine cha Kilimo (SUA) Jaji Mstaafu Mhe. Joseph Sinde Warioba Siku ya Jumanne tarehe 26 Oktoba, 2021 wakati akizungumza na Menejimenti na wafanyakazi wa SUA katika ukumbi wa Multpurpose Kampasi ya Edward Moringe. 

    “Katika miaka 5 niliyofanya kazi SUA nimeona vijana wengi waliomaliza masomo yao hapa wamefungua miradi yao wenyewe na hata wale niliowaona kwenye kituo cha ATAMIZI nina hakika watakuwa mfano mzuri kwenye jamii wakienda kuyatumia mafunzo yao vizuri” alisema Mhe. Warioba.

    Akizungumza  kwa niaba ya Naibu Katibu Mkuu wa Wizara ya Kilimo,Mkurugenzi wa Sera na Mipango Wizara  ya Kilimo  Bwana Obadiah Nyagiro katika Warsha ya kitaifa ya kutoa mrejesho wa matokeo ya utafiti wa Mradi wa Utafiti wa Sera za Kilimo Barani Afrika (APRA) iliyofanyika Mkoani Dodoma tarehe 26 Oktoba 2021, amepongeza kazi kubwa iliyofanywa na watafiti kwenye mradi huo na hasa kitendo chao cha kuamua kurudisha matokeo ya utafiti wao kwa walengwa.

    “Hawa vijana wakitoka hapa watasaidia kuwa walimu kwa jamii inayowazunguka na tayari wana kitu cha kufanya ukweli nimefurahi sana kuona vijana kutoka Mikoa mbalimbali kama Tabora, Mwanza, Kigoma, Rukwa wakipata mafunzo haya” alisema Mhe. Jaji Warioba.

    Kauli hiyo imetolewa na Waziri wa Kilimo,Umwagiliaji na mifugo  wa Serikali ya Mapinduzi ya Zanzibar Mhe. Soud Hassan kwa niaba ya Waziri wa Kilimo Mhe. Profesa Adolf Mkenda wakati akifunga Kongamano la Pili la kitaifa la Kilimo Hai lililofanyika kwa siku mbili ( 22 - 23 Oktoba 2021) Jijini Dodoma na kuwakutanisha wadau wote wa Kilimo Hai kutoka ndani na nje ya Tanzania.

  • SUA vinara kwa wabobezi wa Kilimo hai na Kilimo ikolojia Tanzania

    Hayo yamesemwa na Mtafiti Mbobezi kwenye tafiti za Kilimo Hai kutoka SUA Prof. Kalunde Sibuga wakati akiwasilisha maelezo yake kuhusu mchango wa SUA katika kutekeleza maazimio ya Mkutano wa kwanza wa kitaifa wa Kilimo hai wa mwaka 2019 kwenye mkutano wa pili unaoendelea Jijini Dodoma.

    “Katika shahada ya kwanza tumekuwa na mtaala wa Kilimo Hai Hata kabla ya Mkutano wa mwaka 2019 na mtaala ulilenga wanafunzi wanaochukua shahada ya Kilimo pamoja na ile ya Bustani na Mbongamboga, na huu mtaala bado upo kwahiyo tulianza zamani” Alifafanua Prof. Sibuga.

    The training was conducted for five (5) days with the focus on mobile data collection and Quantum GIS for data visualization and mapping and was attended by finalist students from Bachelor of Science in Forestry (BSc FOR) and bachelor of science in Environmental Science and Management (BSc ESM)

    The REFOREST Programme (hosted at Sokoine University of Agriculture), organized a field excursion, which took place from 1st – 8th July, 2021. The purpose of the excursion was to expose the Sida funded REFOREST Programme PhD students to the different aspects of forest based value chains within the Southern Highlands of Tanzania.

    The Chair will be integrated into the SACIDS Foundation for One Health, an institute of Sokoine University of Agriculture on behalf of member institutions from the SADC region that founded SACIDS in 2008, initially as a regional programme, until 2018 when it was transformed into its current status. His genomics expertise will be core for the overall SACIDS research programme that addresses One Health genomics of viral epidemics and antimicrobial resistance both in humans and animals. He will collaborate with the University of Zambia (Zambia), Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Malawi), University of the Free State (South Africa), the Royal Veterinary College (UK), the Pirbright Institute (UK), Lancaster University (UK), University of Gent (Belgium), Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (Sweden) and the Animal Health Research Centre (Spain).
  • SUA continues to rank number 1 in top university by citations in Tanzania

    According to the results released in July 2021 by webometrics, Sokoine University of Agriculture is ranked number 1 in Tanzania, 31 in Africa and 1,215 worldwide in the list of Top 5000 universities by citations with the total of 98, 143 citations. On January 2021, SUA had 89,752 citations and was also ranked number 1 in Tanzania.

  • From Rodent Research Project (RRP) to SUA Institute of Pest Management (IPM): A Process of Transformation and Excellence

    This article is the fascinating story of the transformation of SUA Pest Management Centre from a tiny Belgian Government supported research project on “Rodents as disease carriers and crop destroyers” between 1986 - 1989 that led to formation of the “Rodent Research Project” in 1990, “SUA Pest Management Centre” in 2000 and now “SUA Institute of Pest Management” in 2021.

    Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) scientists are vibrant and optimistic about finding the last solution to the African swine fever (ASF). This re-emerging viral disease is highly contagious and deadly for both domestic and wild pigs. It is responsible for severe economic and production losses. Over 100 years after the description of the first case of African swine fever, the disease outbreaks is still reported in many African countries and beyond. The future control of African swine fever spread like other contagious viral diseases focuses on the early detection and management.

  • Policy Workshop: Exploration of the Governance Environment of Rural-Urban Transformation in Tanzania

    From 11th to 12th of May, 2021, Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA), in collaboration with TANSHEP, Department of Agricultural Extension and Community Development (DAECD), the Bureau for Agricultural Consultancy and Advisory Services (BACAS) and Sokoine University of Agriculture conducted a training on Smallholder Horticulture Empowerment and Promotion (SHEP) approach and SAA field models in Morogoro, Tanzania.

  • The more biodiversity, the better the society!
    Sokoine University of Agriculture organized the “Ecosystem and Biodiversity” field excursion for the Forest Science PhD students from 19th – 23rd May 2021 to the coastal region of Tanga and the Afromontane region of Kilimanjaro Mountain. The aim was to expose students to various ecosystems and biodiversity therein.
  • Climate change is real: could agroforestry be a sustainable solution to dryland farming?

    During the field excursion, the students discussed opportunities and challenges of agroforestry technologies promoted for land rehabilitation and for building resilient and productive agricultural systems in dryland areas. Drylands (Arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas) cover about 61% of Tanzania and represent the region most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change in the country. Variability in rainfall patterns and temperature fluctuations are the main climate change related challenges to sustainable crop production in dryland ecosystems.

  • SUA donates safe blood to Morogoro Regional Referral Hospital

    The blood donated today is the one received from volunteers at the Edward Moringe Sokoine Memorial Week event which was held at the Sokoine University of Agriculture main campus grounds from May 24 to May 27, 2021.

    The handover was made by the principal of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities from SUA, Prof. Samuel Kabote on behalf of the vice chancellor Prof. Raphael Chibunda at the offices of the hospital located in Morogoro municipality.

    Engineer Kalobelo gave the advice on 26th May 2021 at Sokoine University of Agriculture sports grounds while closing the staff sports and games competitions famously known as CHIBUNDA CUP, the season of 2020/2021.

    Engineer Kalobelo said the Chibunda Cup competition should be a catalyst for other public and private institutions to create a culture of organizing and coordinating sports events without waiting for invitations from outside the region.

    Unique features of the curriculum for B.Sc. ITIN includes the use of student-centered Learning approaches where each semester involves a mini project for students to execute and foster practical skills.   • PATRICK MPOMBEYE: Designer of the trap used to capture rats in the fields
    ​​​​​​​MPOMBEYE, PATRICK CLEOPHACE from Pest Management Center (SPMC) of the Sokoine University of Agriculture has developed a Trap Barrier System (TBS) for controlling rats and their effects on rice fields. Its simple system has managed to control rat damage in the field from 13% to 1%. In this short video, Mr. Mpombeye explains how the system he designed works (The language used is Kiswahili)

    The Program, which basically launches a National Vaccination program against the Zoonotic disease was facilitated by different stakeholders including FAO, WHO, AFROHUN, SUA, MUHAS, MoLF, and Kisarawe District Council. Sokoine University of Agriculture participated through the College Of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences with four Instructors and 30 veterinary students being involved.

    Following the great success of research on the use of rats in identifying bombs and parasites that cause Tuberculosis and others, researchers from Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) say there is a strong possibility that these rats could be used to detect Corona Virus infection ( COVID 19)

    The model was launched on the 16th of March 2021 at Sokoine University of Agriculture Morogoro by the Minister of Agriculture, Professor Adolf Mkenda where he explained how the approach will help farmers increase productivity in agriculture and thus help them to overcome poverty and also increase GDP
  • REFOREST Programme organizes Orientation workshop for Resource Persons

    The workshop objectives were to initiate contacts among lecturers teaching each subject so they could familiarize with the REFOREST programme, elaborate the course contents given in the PhD curriculum, agree on how to share the teaching load, understand and apply the rules and regulations for PhD studies at SUA (academic as well as administrative processes) and establish communication protocols among them.
